Botetourt Local VADOC Custody

A state-responsible person does not have to be inside a building labeled as a VADOC prison. The statewide locator can include people housed in local or regional jails under VADOC authority. In a Botetourt case, the physical address may therefore remain a local jail while sentence computation and correctional authority involve VADOC. That result is not a county community release and should not be read as one.

Match three facts before describing status: the physical location, the authority shown by VADOC, and the court sentence. A Botetourt-Craig Regional Jail release entry can record a transfer into state responsibility. The VADOC locator can then show the current institution or local bed. If the person later appears at District 40, confinement may have ended while adult supervision continues. Each transition has its own record and date.

The projected date belongs to the active state calculation. It can change with verified jail credit, earning class, discipline, consecutive terms, a new sentence, a detainer, appellate action, or correction of agency data. The actual release is documented by the notification-of-release letter and signed Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole that apply to the case. Final discharge can occur still later. Keeping those events separate prevents a forecast from being reported as an executed release.

Note: A local bed under VADOC authority remains custody even when the physical facility is not a state prison.

Virginia DOC Release Paths

A Botetourt County adult may enter VADOC responsibility after a state sentence even though no state prison was identified in the county directory. The person can transfer from Botetourt-Craig Regional Jail to a VADOC institution. In some cases, a state-responsible person remains physically housed in a local or regional jail. Later, the person may discharge from custody, leave on parole, or move to a district office for supervision.

The system boundary matters. A local jail release entry records the end of that facility's custody. It does not serve as VADOC's later state discharge. Conversely, a state locator result does not provide the regional jail's exact exit code. When the custody path crosses agencies, match the local release entry to the VADOC record and court sentence.

Search VADOC Release Status

The official VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator covers more than prison beds. It can include state inmates, people under VADOC authority in local or regional jails, probationers, parolees, institutional-hospital patients, and Community Corrections Alternative Program participants. VADOC says the data updates daily and warns that it may be inaccurate or outdated.

1. Use the seven-digit DOC ID when known because it distinguishes people with similar names.
2. Otherwise enter at least the first three letters of the first name and the complete last name.
3. Apply optional location, race, gender, or age-range filters only as needed.
4. Open the candidate record and compare DOC number, age, identity details, custody status, and facility or office.
5. Read the location and status together before deciding whether the person remains confined or is supervised in the community.

A person who no longer appears is not automatically discharged. The locator does not promise a complete historic index after both custody and supervision end. For the exact event, request VADOC confirmation or obtain the signed release papers and relevant court order. Note: A daily update can still lag an event, and absence from the locator does not establish a final discharge date.

VADOC Search Result Fields

The official interface uses precise labels. The documented fields include Custody Status, sex, race, age, DOC Number, and facility name, type, and address. A "Projected Release Date" can appear. It is a forecast based on the current sentence calculation and credit assumptions, not an appointment or proof that the person left.

VADOC procedure identifies projected parole eligibility, mandatory parole, and good-time release dates as facts that may be publicly releasable at the time of inquiry, subject to disclosure rules. Customer-service staff may confirm a projected release date. An actual release date remains a different fact and should be confirmed through the executed state record.

Actual Virginia DOC Release

VADOC's facility release process draws the key line between a forecast and an event. A person who has satisfied the sentence is discharged or released on parole. VADOC provides a notification-of-release letter, and the applicable Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole is signed and witnessed. The agency says discharge or parole release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the stated date, weather permitting.

Property is returned, transportation by bus may be arranged, and account funds are issued under the state process. VADOC says the person receives at least $25 unless meeting a detainer. Those facts apply to VADOC facility releases. They must not be copied to the Botetourt regional jail, whose local exit time, property procedure, and transportation plan were not verified.

A detainer can change the destination. The person may leave a state institution and enter another agency's custody instead of the community. Read the release papers, conditions, and receiving-custodian information together.

Virginia DOC Release Records

VADOC records requests use the department's FOIA or contact process and Operating Procedure 050.1. A focused request can identify the person by full name and DOC number, state the relevant date, and ask for publicly releasable facts such as custody status on that date, projected and actual release information, the probation or parole office, and a specific release document.

Do not ask the department to decide why a person disappeared from the locator. Ask for existing records. A useful request distinguishes the court sentence, projected release date, actual facility release date, and final discharge from supervision. Those events can occur on different dates. If the request concerns the earlier local jail exit, the Botetourt Sheriff's record is the proper source instead.

Note: A local sheriff cannot certify VADOC's later discharge, and VADOC may not hold the jail's exact local release code.

Botetourt State Supervision

A person released from VADOC custody can remain under adult parole or probation. The correct local office is Probation and Parole District 40 in Fincastle, not District 15 in nearby Salem. District 40 serves Botetourt, Alleghany, Craig, and Rockbridge Counties, Covington, and listed towns.

A locator result tied to a district office supports that community supervision continues. It does not mean the person is still in a prison bed. District staff may confirm the proper reporting office while withholding protected case details. A person who is fully discharged from custody and supervision may no longer appear, so obtain the actual discharge record when that distinction matters.

VADOC Release Date Changes

A projected date can move because the calculation changes. The offense date and sentence type determine whether Good Conduct Allowance or Earned Sentence Credits apply. Presentence credit, consecutive terms, mandatory minimums, discipline, earning level, new sentences, detainers, appellate action, and administrative corrections can also affect the result.

The state's time computation page should be used for the live governing detail. A rough percentage is unsafe because Virginia has different credit regimes and offense lists. The court order supplies the legal starting terms. VADOC maintains the active state calculation.

Note: A projected date should be rechecked near release because credits, legal holds, and agency calculations can change.
