Verify Botetourt County Supervision

Botetourt County parole and probation records answer a question that a jail release alone cannot: does the person remain under correctional supervision after leaving custody? Parole follows a conditional release authorized for an eligible sentence, while probation comes from a court order and may begin without a prison term or after confinement. To verify Botetourt County post-release supervision, match the person in Virginia's corrections locator, read the court order or parole decision, and confirm the assigned district office. A missing online result does not prove discharge, a warrant, or absconding.

Botetourt Parole Versus Probation

Both statuses can begin after a person leaves a jail or prison, but they do not arise from the same authority. The Virginia Parole Board decides parole in cases that remain legally eligible. A Botetourt Circuit Court judge may impose probation instead of active confinement, or may order a period of probation after part of a sentence is served. Virginia Department of Corrections staff administer community supervision for both through district offices.

A person may therefore be released from physical custody and still have rules, reporting duties, and a supervision end date. The label matters because the source record differs. A court sentencing order is central for probation. A Board decision and VADOC release papers are central for parole.

Virginia generally abolished discretionary parole for felony offenses committed on or after January 1, 1995, under Virginia Code § 53.1-165.1. Exceptions remain for specific legal categories. Legacy offenses, certain juvenile-offense cases, geriatric routes, and defined jury-sentenced cases require the live statute and the agency's case calculation.

Probation should not be inferred from the fact that part of a sentence was suspended. Read the full signed order for the term, start point, and any supervision language. A web case summary can help find the file, but the clerk's order controls when a summary is unclear. Likewise, a parole label should come from the Board and VADOC records rather than from a person's past prison history.

Parole
Conditional release from confinement under Board authority while supervision continues.
Probation
Court-ordered community supervision, either in place of active time or after confinement.
Discharge
The documented end of a custody or supervision obligation in the record being reviewed.
Absconder
A formal supervision status that must come from an authorized record, not from an absent search result.

Verify Botetourt Post-Release Supervision

The official public starting point is the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. It is broader than a prison roster. It can include a person at a VADOC institution, a person held in a local jail under VADOC authority, and a probationer or parolee assigned to a district office. Search by the seven-digit DOC number when known. A name search uses the first three letters of the first name and the full last name, with optional filters for location, race, gender, and age range.

  1. Identify the person with a DOC number, full name, and case details. Do not select a match from a common name alone.
  2. Search the VADOC locator and compare the displayed identity, status, and location. A district-office result supports community supervision; a prison result supports current state custody.
  3. For probation, obtain the signed sentencing order through the Botetourt Circuit Court record when the online summary is not enough.
  4. For parole, review the Board's monthly decision report, then verify VADOC status and the actual Order of Release or Conditions of Parole.
  5. Call District 40 to confirm that it is the right office. Staff may limit case details under supervision-record rules.
  6. If nothing appears, request records from the proper custodian. Do not turn absence into proof of discharge or a violation.
Decision is not release. A Parole Board Grant records approval. Physical release follows only after certification, release planning, detainer review, and VADOC's executed event.

For a broader custody-and-record check, the Botetourt County released inmate search joins the jail, court, VADOC, VINE, and destination records. That wider chain is useful when the last custodian is uncertain.

Note: VADOC says the locator updates daily but warns that displayed information can be inaccurate or out of date.

Botetourt Supervision Uses District 40

Botetourt's adult supervision office is VADOC Probation and Parole District 40 in Fincastle. The official directory says District 40 serves Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig, and Rockbridge Counties, Covington, and listed towns. Nearby geography can mislead a searcher: District 15 in Salem serves a different footprint and should not be substituted merely because it is near Roanoke.

The office listing confirms the local route, but it is not a public case file. Use the locator and governing order for the person's status.

Botetourt Supervision Status Limits

Conditions are the enforceable rules in the release or probation documents. They can include reporting and other case-specific duties, but the public locator is not a full conditions file. VADOC may withhold supervision material. The signed Conditions of Probation or Conditions of Parole, the court order, and agency records are the better sources for the exact terms.

No official public Botetourt absconder list was found in the sources reviewed on August 8, 2026. A person missing from the VADOC locator may have completed supervision, may be outside its promised display scope, may be listed under different data, or may be affected by an update issue. None of those possibilities proves absconding. Warrant status also carries a separate legal meaning and must be taken from a court or authorized warrant source.

VINE does not solve this issue. Virginia Jail VINE reports custody events from participating local and regional jails. It is not a probation compliance monitor. If a supervision matter results in a new jail custody event, VINE can be used for that jail record, but the supervision decision remains with the responsible agency and court.

Note: District staff can route a caller to the correct office while withholding details that are not publicly releasable.

Botetourt Parole Decision Records

The Virginia Parole Board public-meetings page is an event-based calendar with agendas, livestream links, and minutes when posted. Since July 1, 2024, final deliberation and a vote to grant parole require a public meeting, but the Board states that not every parole-eligible person will appear on that public calendar. Its irregular events are not a full weekly or monthly inmate search.

Decision results are published separately on the Board's monthly reports page. A report can show DOC number, name, case type, decision and certification dates, Grant or Not Grant, reasons or conditions, estimated time served, jurisdiction, offenses, sentence details, and Board-member votes. A denial receives reasons, and consideration may be deferred. These fields document Board action, not the jail gate or prison release time.

After locating a Botetourt-related decision, compare its DOC number and case type, then move to VADOC custody and release records.

The Board's internal interview schedule is not the same as its public calendar. Policy describes an initial personal interview, quarterly review organization, and operational docket preparation. Those internal dockets should not be advertised as a complete public lookup unless the Board posts them. For a named person, use the published meeting material and monthly reports that are actually available.

How Botetourt Supervision Ends

Physical release and final discharge are different points. A person can leave a VADOC facility on parole or leave a jail with probation still to serve. Final discharge occurs when the relevant custody and supervision duties end under the agency or court record. A locator entry may cease after full discharge, but disappearance is not itself the discharge document.

For probation, compare the original order, any later violation or modification orders, and the supervising agency's record. For parole, compare the Board decision, executed release papers, any revocation action, and the final VADOC record. Virginia FOIA allows access to existing public records, but supervision and correctional material may be withheld under specific exemptions. A request should identify the exact record rather than ask an office to make a new conclusion.

Virginia FOIA generally gives a Virginia citizen access to existing public records and requires a response within five working days through one of the statutory paths. The office may provide records, cite a withholding basis, report that no record was found, or invoke the permitted extension. That framework does not require staff to answer a new question, calculate an end date, or disclose protected supervision details.

Parole eligibility is also not a release end date. For an eligible older sentence, Virginia Code § 53.1-151 contains commitment fractions, caps, and exclusions. Case type, offense date, and statutory exceptions must be checked before any calculation is attempted.

Botetourt Release Papers and ID

State-facility release has a documented paper trail. VADOC says property is returned, a notification-of-release letter is provided, and the applicable Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole is signed and witnessed. Those documents help distinguish the actual custody exit from a forecast or Board vote. They may also identify the next supervision step.

Local ID assistance is governed by a separate rule. Virginia Code § 53.1-116.1:02 directs qualifying local facilities to help certain people confined at least 90 days obtain specified identification documents when readily obtainable and not declined. That does not make VADOC's state release process the Botetourt-Craig Regional Jail's procedure. Ask the regional jail for the person's property, paperwork, and ID-assistance record.

Keep the records separate. Board action shows a decision, VADOC papers show an executed state release, and District 40 records show community supervision.
